Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) announced a grant for $95,568 was  awarded to Cameron County by the Texas Department of Rural Affairs for repairs to damage caused by Hurricane Dolly.</p><p>The funds, which are made available from the 2008 Supplemental Community Development Block Grant, will be used to reconstruct Dilworth Road from Bellino road to the Harlingen city limits. The funding will also be used to purchase and install two natural gas generators at three sewer lift stations in the Town of Rancho Viejo.  Automatic transfer switches, natural gas supply line, and permanent feed lines will be installed.</p><p>“These funds are helping to provide our residents with the improvements and repairs they need as we continue to recover from Hurricanes that have hit our communities”, said Rep. Hinojosa. “In this case, as in others throughout the Rio Grande Valley and surrounding areas, Hurricane Dolly left plenty of damage, but we continue to rebuild and make our communities safer and more comfortable for our residents”.</p><p>Many Rio Grande Valley Cities have been helped by the Texas Department of Rural Affairs since the aftermath of Hurricane Dolly in 2008. Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) announced Texas A&#38;M University at College Station’s Center for Housing and Urban Development (CHUD) Colonias Program (in Texas Congressional District 15) was awarded a $396,773 grant by the U.S. Department of Education for the High School Equivalency Program (HEP).</p><p>The purpose of the HEP program is to help support state and local efforts to assist migratory and seasonal farm workers (or children of such workers) who are 16 years of age or older and not currently enrolled in school to obtain the equivalent of a high school diploma. Ultimately, the program strives to guide and provide support services for the student to gain employment or begin postsecondary education or enter the military.</p><p>“The Texas A&#38;M University CHUD Colonias program has made great strides in helping our children receive a college education”, said Rep. Hinojosa. “This grant offers the support our low-income and migrant students need to get ahead. I’m very pleased that the Texas A&#38;M University CHUD Colonias program was a recipient of a U.S. Department of Education grant for this extremely important program.  They continue to help our students fulfill their dreams”.</p><p>This grant is for a one year plan and it is anticipated that the program will be funded for a total of 5 years. Besides the educational classes, the HEP program provides individual guidance, group guidance, and counseling opportunities as well as cultural and educational field trips for eligible students. The funds will be used by the non-profit company in La Feria for staff support, operation and technical assistance to increase economic development.</p><p>“The people of the City of La Feria are motivated and working hard to expand in the area of economic development”, said Rep. Hinojosa. “I want to congratulate those involved who are looking at all options, including this grant, in bringing new businesses into their community and creating a better working environment and jobs for all of their residents”.</p><p>The funding will be used primarily for the technical assistance program which will be used for personnel costs, training, travel, professional service costs, materials and equipment. La Feria Mayor Steve Brewer said city leaders and the business community are already working on bringing in new businesses to the city.</p><p>“This is a big step in the right direction for economic development in our city and rural community”, said Mayor Brewer. “We are thrilled about being awarded this grant and we are very appreciative of Congressman Hinojosa for being a very valuable asset in helping our business community”.</p><p>La Feria was one of only 180 institutions chosen for a grant award. The grant is part of the Community Development Financial Institutions Program (CDFI) which invests and builds the capacity of private, for-profit and non-profit certified community development financial institutions that serve low-income people and communities lacking adequate access to affordable financial products and services.</p><p>Since its creation in 1994, the CDFI Fund has awarded almost $1.2 billion to CDFIs community development organization and financial institutions through the CDFI Program, the Bank Enterprise Awards program, and the Native American CDFI Assistance program. In addition, the CDFI Fund has allocated $26 billion in tax credit authority to Community Development Entities through the New Markets Tax Credit Program.</p><p>###</p><p> </p>&#13;

From Nanaimo to St. John’s, Yellowknife to Trois-Rivières, hard-working men and women keep our communities moving, drive innovation and provide the backbone of our economy. Canada is truly blessed with a labour force and a trade union movement that are dedicated and resilient.<br />
The past few years have not been easy. The worst economic crisis in generations, as well as foreign takeovers at places like Vale Inco and Xstrata, has left our workforce battered. This Labour Day some 1.5 million Canadians find themselves out of a job—unsure of when or from where their next paycheque will come.<br />
Yet in Ottawa, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives continue to wash their hands of working families.<br />
But a brighter future is possible. That’s why New Democrats remain committed to putting workers first. We’ve introduced plans to strengthen EI and CPP/QPP, protect pensions from corporate creditors and keep well-paying, family-supporting jobs here in Canada.<br />
After all, true economic recovery can only happen when our workers are back on their feet.<br />
So as we gather today with friends and family, I hope you’ll join me in saluting the immense contributions of Canada’s workers. This Labour Day, let’s all commit to a Canada of opportunity and fairness for every one of our working men and women.  </p>

Mike had served on, and was just recently re-elected to the Board of Trustees for South Texas College. He was a tireless and energetic force of nature who gave so much to the Rio Grande Valley and to the people he loved. <p>From Nanaimo to St. John’s, Yellowknife to Trois-Rivières, hard-working men and women keep our communities moving, drive innovation and provide the backbone of our economy. Canada is truly blessed with a labour force and a trade union movement that are dedicated and resilient.</p>
<p>The past few years have not been easy. The worst economic crisis in generations, as well as foreign takeovers at places like Vale Inco and Xstrata, has left our workforce battered. This Labour Day some 1.5 million Canadians find themselves out of a job—unsure of when or from where their next paycheque will come. </p>
<p>Yet in Ottawa, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives continue to wash their hands of working families. </p>
<p>But a brighter future is possible. That’s why New Democrats remain committed to putting workers first. We’ve introduced plans to strengthen EI and CPP/QPP, protect pensions from corporate creditors and keep well-paying, family-supporting jobs here in Canada.  </p>
<p>After all, true economic recovery can only happen when our workers are back on their feet.  </p>

La plupart des débris ont été retirés des chemins et ces derniers sont ouverts à la circulation. Les gens devraient quand même continuer à conduire avec prudence et à faire preuve de vigilance près des arbres et des lignes électriques tombés au sol.</p><p>« Je tiens à remercier tous nos partenaires qui ont uni leurs efforts et réagi si rapidement et si efficacement à l’ouragan Earl, de dire Ramona Jennex, ministre de la Gestion des urgences. Je suis également très reconnaissante envers les Néo-Écossais pour s'être si bien préparés. Il est bon de voir les voisins qui s'entraident afin que tous se relèvent de la tempête. »</p><p>Nova Scotia Power indique que le service a été rétabli pour plus de 75 p. 100 des clients sans électricité dans la région du centre de la Nouvelle-Écosse, y compris la Municipalité régionale d’Halifax, et l'entreprise prévoit que l'essentiel du service sera rétabli partout dans la province aujourd'hui. Much of the debris has been cleared from roads and they are open to traffic. People should still continue to drive with care and be cautious of downed trees and power lines.</p><p>"I would like to thank all our partners for pulling together and responding so quickly and efficiently to Hurricane Earl," said Ramona Jennex, Minister of Emergency Management. "I also extend my sincere appreciation to Nova Scotians for being so prepared for this event. It's great to see neighbours continuing to help each other recover from the storm."</p><p>Nova Scotia Power reports that power has been restored to more than 75 per cent of those affected in central Nova Scotia, including Halifax Regional Municipality, and anticipate most power will be restored throughout the province today. People in remote areas or those with more severe damage, are expected to have their power restored by tomorrow. People can check on the status of outages at <a href="http://nspower.ca">nspower.ca</a> (<a href="http://nspower.ca/m">nspower.ca/m</a> from mobile devices), or report outages by calling Nova Scotia Power at 1-877-428-6004.</p><p>Food safety is always a concern during power disruptions lasting several hours. The Department of Agriculture advises people to be careful about the food in their refrigerators or deep freezers. Foods will generally keep in refrigerators for several hours without power, if the door is kept closed. A fully stocked deep freezer can keep foods safe for two to three days. For food safety questions or concerns over the weekend, call 902-424-1173. </p><p>Please note the following food safety information:<br />-- If you are still without power, perishable foods in fridges since the power outage, such as meats, fish, poultry, dairy, cooked vegetables, cooked pasta, cooked rice or protein-based food like eggs or tofu, are likely unsafe.
