The temporary closure of a Canadian Mine has some speculating whether or not the closure has anything to do with the death of a vocal anti-mining activist.
According to a document from the state’s attorney, police have arrested three people in connection to death. The three arrested, all appear to have a connection to Blackfire Exploration, a Calgary firm.
The document identified Jorge Carlos Sepulveda Calvo, a part time driver for Blackfire, as the shooter. This has been confirmed by forensic tests, according to the document.
Blackfire had previously said that Sepulveda had not worked for the company since June 6, 2008.
The document also lists two other suspects. Caralampio Lopez Vazquez was arrested for allegedly being the motorcycle driver that helped Sepulveda escape. Blackfire has confirmed that someone by the same name does work for the company, however they said that they could confirm if it was the same person.
The role of the third man arrested was not revealed. Ricardo Antonio Coutino Velasco was a transport contractor for the company.
“The reason this company has been closed down is due to building roads without authorization, causing pollution and toxic emissions, affecting the direction and flow of water sources, and changing the use of land without permission,” said Carolina Ochoa of the Chiapas state Ministry of Environment.
Ochoa denies that the closure has anything to do with the death of the activist.
The activist was shot in the chest and neck four times with a 9 mm calibre gun, according to the document.
Blackfire has not commented on the closure of the plant in relation to the death of the activist.
