As the Alberta Capital Region faces its first major snowstorm of the season, City of Edmonton crews are hard at work sanding and plowing streets to keep Edmonton moving.
“Our priorities for this afternoon’s drive home are hills and bridges, particularly in the river valley, as well as freeways and major arterial roads,” says Bob Dunford, Director of Roadway Maintenance. “Once the winds stop blowing and the snowfall ends, our crews will be able to get a better handle on plowing and sanding other priority routes.”
The snow and slightly warmer temperatures can make driving difficult but there are some things that motorists can also do to help keep Edmonton moving:
- Ensure windows are clear of snow and ice before traveling
- Give yourself more time to get to your destination
- Drive for the conditions, slow down, brake sooner, and leave extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you
- Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order
- Use extreme caution when passing or approaching snow maintenance equipment such as sanders and graders
