Stanway, 59, joined the premier’s office Feb. 1, 2007, after Premier Ed Stelmach won the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta in December, 2006.
Premier Stelmach praised Stanway’s steady and calming influence in managing a role that is fast-paced and ever-changing.
“Paul has been a trusted adviser and good friend,” said Premier Stelmach. “The job of communications director is a pressure-filled job, and Paul has my deepest gratitude for the time and effort he has put into his work on my behalf.”
The former newspaper executive and political columnist said the three years shepherding the premier’s communications strategy have been among the most fulfilling of his professional career.
“It has been a fantastic ride,” said Stanway. “The highlight was definitely the 2008 provincial election, getting such an overwhelming endorsement of the Premier’s plan for Alberta. Working with Premier Stelmach has been a real privilege. He’s a man of great vision, very passionate about Alberta – and a guy who gets his head under the hood to make sure the right policies are in place to achieve that vision.”
Stanway said he welcomes the opportunity to spend more time with his growing family, which now includes two grandchildren. “I’m certainly not in retirement mode. There are some very interesting opportunities out there.”
