Houston Snow Day: Snow in Texas?

by: Canada Views | Dec 4th, 2009

snowhoustonResidents of Houston woke up to a surprise this morning. Snow fell over Houston Texas late last night, a very rare event for this southern United States city.

Two more inches of snow are expected in the evening.

The snow fell because of a surge of cold air coming down off the Rocky Mountains.

The Houston Airport is reporting temperatures as low as 24 degrees with the wind chill factored in.

Snow only falls on Houston about once every four years. This year’s snow fall is the earliest on record. Snow did fall on Houston last year, making this the first time that it has ever fallen two years in a row.

Could this be an effect of climate change?

Also, about 2.5 hours north of Houston, it light snow falls nearly every year, but because they’re small towns, it’s now nationally news worthy.

As a resident of Houston, I agree with “me”. I resent the pretentious statement made by “Bringer”. The term “Global Climate Change” is a new term that many are not familiar with using. Scientist are not factual; it’s all speculative opinion and is due to change is another 2 years.

I have been paying attention to the global climate change issues since the EIGHTIES and even in the EIGHTIES I clearly remember scientists stating that changes in the dynamics of the jet stream would lead to increased VARIABILITY in temperatures, and the snow in Houston is directly linked to a deep southern dip of the jet stream, which is becoming more unstable. Global warming has always only been accurate only when it refers to the “greenhouse effect” specifically, but scientists have ALWAYS discussed the variability factor, and it is NOT some NEW thing that will change in 20 years. Geez, people do NOT pay attention. Scientists have tried to discuss this increase in variability for 30 years! Only, people like you, Mimi, clearly only listen to sound bytes because your brain can only handle 7 words at a time. So you kept hearing JUST the “warming” part. But that was YOUR fault- the scientists have not changed their tune AT all.

Should be more like Global WARNING!

funny–i LIVE IN UPSTATE NY–EAST OF LAKE ONTARIO AND WE DON’T HAVE SNOW..WE GOT A DUSTING TODAY…THIS IS ONLY THE 2ND TIME IN MY MEMEORY THAT WE PICKED OUT OUT X-MAS TREE WITH OUT HAVING TO WADE THROUGH 2 FEET OF SNOW..texas_–YOU CAN HAVE IT :)

Global warming is the word expression people like to use when they want to turn their noses up at the impact they are having on the planet. The expression scientists ACTUALLY use is “Global Climate Change” – and that, my friends, is real. Some places are getting colder, others warmer, but we are certainly seeing change to weather patterns on a global scale that is unprecedented.

Global Climate Change is a term only used in the last 2 years (incidentally the coldest of the last 20 years in many places). Before it was only Global Warming. As it looks we are getting actually cooler instead of warmer, some scientists have changed their tune. The prediction models to forecast weather longer than a week are really poor. Climatologists rather like to work with historical series and even those are not accurate.
