New Crown Attorney in Youth Court

Jamie Van Wart has been appointed a youth court Crown attorney in the Halifax office of the Public Prosecution Service.

The appointment was announced today, Dec. 1, by Martin Herschorn, director of Public Prosecutions.

“We are very pleased to welcome a new Crown attorney with Mr. Van Wart’s youth court experience,” said Mr. Herschorn. “He is a welcome addition to our prosecutorial team.”

A native of Vancouver, Mr. Van Wart graduated in 1997 from Trent University in Peterborough, Ont. with a bachelor of arts. He went on to Dalhousie law school as one of seven recipients awarded a scholarship by the Law Foundation of Nova Scotia. While a law student, Mr. Van Wart studied in Amsterdam, Netherlands as a participant of the international law exchange summer program through Dalhousie. He graduated from law school in 2001.

Mr. Van Wart articled with the province of British Columbia before joining the Territorial and Supreme Court of Yukon as a law clerk. In 2004, he was appointed a legal aid lawyer with Yukon Legal Services Society. While at legal aid, Mr. Van Wart maintained a busy practice in youth and adult criminal law and in family law.

For the last two years, Mr. Van Wart was a board member of Challenge Community Vocational Alternatives, a non-profit organization providing employment and social services for disabled Yukoners.

     Jamie Van Wart has been appointed a new youth court Crown

     Director of Public Prosecutions Martin Herschorn made the

announcement today (December 1st). He says a new Crown attorney

with Mr. Van Wart’s youth court experience will be a welcome

addition to Nova Scotia’s prosecutorial team.

     Mr. Van Wart is a native of Vancouver and a 2001 graduate of

Dalhousie law school. After law school he joined the Supreme

Court of Yukon as a law clerk and was later appointed a legal aid

lawyer with Yukon Legal Sevices concentrating in youth and adult

criminal law and in family law.
