Province aids municipalities hit hard by summer storms

by: Government of Alberta | Nov 25th, 2009

The Government of Alberta has approved $4.5 million in disaster-recovery funding to help Edmonton area municipalities recover from severe windstorms last July. Municipalities incurred significant emergency operation costs as a result of the disaster.

“These severe storms had a devastating impact on many communities and this funding will help municipalities recover quickly,” said Ray Danyluk, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “The program is part of our commitment to building safe, strong and sustainable communities.”

Disaster recovery assistance will help the City of Edmonton, Strathcona County and Lamont County with emergency operation and clean-up costs. These communities experienced a severe windstorm on July 18.

The Disaster Recovery Program is a provincewide program that assists municipalities with emergency operation and clean-up costs and helps residents recover uninsurable losses from severe weather events.

The program reflects the Alberta government’s plan for a strong economic recovery. An important part of The Way Forward is maintaining support for programs and services Albertans need most, such as health care, education and safe and vibrant communities.
