ALERT makes cocaine bust in Medicine Hat area

by: Government of Alberta | Nov 23rd, 2009

One person has been arrested and 1,000 street-level doses of cocaine have been seized in the Medicine Hat area. The arrest stems from a month-long investigation by the ALERT Integrated Intelligence Unit and Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) in Medicine Hat.“Since its establishment in 2006, ALERT units have taken more than 600 kilograms of drugs off Alberta streets,” said Fred Lindsay, Alberta Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security. “The continuing success of ALERT’s integrated policing model is having a real impact on the lives of Albertans, and making our communities significantly safer.”

During a traffic stop on November 22, investigators located a half-kilogram of cocaine with a street value of $50,000 hidden in a truck driven by 31 year-old Frank Koran of Medicine Hat. In addition to the cocaine, a small amount of ecstasy tablets and cash was also found. A search warrant was executed on Koran’s residence where investigators found more cocaine and packaging material.

Police have charged Koran with possession and trafficking offences and have seized the Honda Ridgeline truck he was driving at the time of the stop, valued at $25,000.

Koran is scheduled to appear in court in Medicine Hat on November 24.

The Medicine Hat Integrated Intelligence Unit and CFSEU are integrated police teams made up of investigators from the Medicine Hat Police Service and the RCMP. They are part of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), an umbrella organization established by the Alberta government to bring together Alberta’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources to strategically tackle serious and organized crime.
