“Organizations like Camrose Open Door are at the heart of healthy and strong communities,” said Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. “I want to thank all the groups involved for their commitment and dedication to this important project.”
The provincial government is contributing $263,820 to this project from its Major Community Facilities Program (MCFP). Funds provided to the Camrose Open Door Association will help purchase and renovate the Camrose Gateway Centre, including kitchen renovations, flooring, painting, roofing and parking lot development.
“Whether it is for job counselling, emergency shelter or just someone to talk to, the Open Door Association provides important services for youth in Camrose and surrounding areas,” said Verlyn Olson, MLA Wetaskiwin-Camrose. “These renovations and upgrades will allow Camrose Open Door to continue to provide at-risk youth with the opportunities to succeed.”
Started in 2007-08, the MCFP was a two-year, $280-million lottery-funded program that helped municipalities, not-for-profit organizations and Aboriginal communities plan, upgrade or build major public-use facilities that enhance community life. Funds were provided on a matching basis, meaning a great deal of community support was required to make the grant possible. Although the MCFP has ended, benefits like local employment will be seen for years to come.
