Teachers will “be hauled in front of the Human Rights Commission”: Mason on Bill 44

by: skeeks | May 3rd, 2009

The Alberta government is trying to pass a bill that will enshrine into law the right for parents to to pull their children out of classes discussing the topics of evolution and homosexuality.

If passed, the bill will require notifications to go out to parents before topics are discussed that include  “subject-matter that deals explicitly with religion, sexuality or sexual orientation.”

New Democrat leader, Brian Mason, has been leading the charge against this bill. In Question period on Thursday he attacked the government saying, “not only does the government think it’s okay for children to be opted out of studying evolution in the classroom; it puts the onus on teachers to enforce it. If they don’t, they can be hauled in front of the Human Rights Commission. That is new. Why is this Premier planning to expose Alberta teachers to persecution for teaching evolution in schools?”

notsuitableforchildrenA new Facebook group has been started for those against this bill. It is entitled: Pull my kids from school if they’re taught about the Alberta Conservatives.

Below is a description of the group:

The Alberta government is giving parents new rights. We no longer have to accept teaching our children about things we don’t support or believe in – like the Alberta Conservative Party.

They don’t match our views on religion, sexuality, or other sensitive issues – so let’s make sure our kids are not brainwashed by their education system.

Teaching children about this type of behavior in elementary school is wrong. They shouldn’t even be involved in what is good or bad in a sexual context. Why is the teaching of God not allowed in schools, but sexual orientation is? Why are children not taught about religion when they are taught about evolution when many people do believe in a God. I do believe that children are being taught what is not acceptable to a lot of parents and teachers. Pass Bill 44. It also puts the children and parents in an uncomfortable position in their belief systems when one thing is taught at home and another at school. Children who believe in God should not be forced to accept what their educators try to brainwash them into believing.

Wow, as someone who’s planning on being a teacher, i can tell you they don’t teach us brainwashing in the Education Courses. Teaching a child facts isn’t brain washing, and you should encourage your kids to think. I’m sure they are smart children with the ability to take information from more than one person and put together what they believe. Which is another thing; religion is belief. Not Fact. I actually encourage the teachings of all religons and sexual orientation to promote tolerance, I don’t think someone should pull from a class on Christianity or Muslims anymore than i think they should pull out of a class on evolution or gay rights.
People like you are actually the reason I’m scared for this bill, what can i hope that your child is being taught? A one sided view? I don’t think your children should be forced to learn by anyone… including you.

One word for those backward, redneck parents that are trying to get this bill through: HOMESCHOOLING!! If you want to censor your childs education because you are too afraid that your belief system will not stand up to the truth then homeschool your poor child. Don’t make my child and my child’s teacher suffer because you cannot deal with reality, people! As for Ed Stelmach and his cronies. Watching you guys in action for the last couple of years is proof that there is not only evolution but also backwards evolution. This is getting out of hand, it is too crazy for words, it is close to time to pack my bags and leave this province.
